I have a 2000 ford ranger with a manual tranny. Whenever i take off from 1st gear or when i shift from 1st to 2nd my clutch gives a loud and often times long squeek. Does anyone know what this might be, and if it's best just to replace it and get a new clutch.
Thanks
I have the same problem with my 02 ranger 5 spd. It has 40,000km. so is under warranty. They first replaced the slave cylynder/throwout bearing and the noise returned within days. Now they are going to replace the pressure plate and clutch (clutch pad at my own expense even though it is in excellent condition) It seems they have info on this problem with the 3litre engines and the 4 cylinder too but not on the 4litre engine. My email is willyb9@msn.com if yu want to contact me I'll let you know how it works out. Having the work done next friday.
Hmmmm....what info do they have on it concerning a 3.0? Thats what i have, and i get a kind of sqeeeeak sound when i start from a stop sometimes. I figured it was just because i have oversize tires and 3.73 gears (and 88,000 miles), and it was too much for the clutch to handle. Please let me know any info you have. thanks.
My dealer was not specific with the exact fix but this "information" is what caused them to replace the pressure plate under warranty as they had first refused saying it was a wear item and was only covered 1yr/20k. Interesting to note that I only have this problem when the engine is cold and goes away after a few minutes and clutch applications starting out in first gear. It really makes me think it has something to do with moisture because once warmed up there is no sign of the 'screeech' I think maybe condensation forms overnite and causes some additional slippage as the clutch is engaged. Your Ford dealer should be able to provide you with the tech. bulletins they all have access to.

00-5-7 NOISE - "SQUAWKING/EEKING" HEARD FROM THE CLUTCH ON ACCELERATION FROM A STOP OR WHEN UNDER LOAD IN FIRST GEAR - VEHICLES WITH 4.0L OHV AND M5OD TRANSMISSION
Publication Date: FEBRUARY 28, 2000
FORD: 1998-2000 EXPLORER, RANGER
ISSUE:
A "squawking/eeking" noise may be heard from the clutch on acceleration from a stop or when under load in first gear on some vehicles. This may be caused by the 4.0L OHV engine allowing the clutch pressure plate to go into resonance when the clutch becomes 90% engaged. The clutch may be noisy, but function and life are not affected.
ACTION:
Remove clutch disc and pressure plate assembly and replace with new clutch disc and revised pressure plate assembly. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Verify noise is coming from the clutch assembly.
Refer to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual, Section 308-01 for clutch assembly and pressure plate removal and installation procedures.
Remove existing clutch disc and pressure plate assembly.
Install a new Clutch Disc Assembly (F87Z-7550-AA) and revised Pressure Plate Assembly (YL5Z-7563-AA).
Verify repair with road test.
Thats intresting that function and life of the clutch are not affected. I never really worried much about it because it dosen't happen too often, only when i try to start off more quickly than normal. Plus, i'm sure my clutch has about had it. nearly 90,000 miles of driving around with big tires and 3.73 gears and lots of off-roading have taken it's toll on it, I'm sure. To be honest, I'm very suprised its lasted this long...knock on wood.
Update regarding 'screeching' noise from clutch on cold startups. Just had new pressure plate/clutch installed yesterday. This is in addition to new slave/throwout bearing 2 weeks ago which did not solve problem. Sure glad this was done under warranty! (Had to pay for the clutch $126 not bad) Noticed with the upgraded pressure plate that the clutch pedal is considerably lighter, this should fix the noise problem......so far so good!
