on my 78, the rear shock brackets rusted off the frame. (both sides) ive been driving around without them anyways tho.
my question is where i could buy new brackets to mount new shocks? i cant seem to find the right years in catalogs or on-line.
while im on the subject, i was thinking bout rancho 5000 shocks, i have heard good things bout them. it is used mostly as a daily driver, with some off-highway shenanigans -stock height on 35's
does anybody have experience with these?
thanx in advance -- Matt
glr- thx for the prompt response, but im not sure what your trying to say. mabey i wasn't clear in my description...
my rear shocks are only being held by the bracket that is attached to the axle, the top bracket, which would be attatched to the frame rusted in half.
i believe them to be bolt on brackets, but I can't find any place that sells them.
what is a "yard" mount?
See if Ford has them. Mine rusted off, and they had them for an 84. Give them a call. I imagine that the bracket wasn't changed much over the years....
I got mine from Ford when they rusted out, but that was a few years ago. I drove around for a couple of days without the rear shocks too. I was bouncing all over the place. -be careful doing that.
I got mine at the local dealer last summer. The dealer ordered them from a dealer in Cleveland, Oh that buys old stock. Check with the parts counterman at the Ford dealer.
a member named Duthlerfordparts posted the part # and i used that to get them from the dealer(they had them in stock!). I am not home or i could get the # for you.
for anyone interested the part # is d8tz-18169-a and my dealer said they were 41.95 ea.
thx blueoval for the tip and dutherford, wherever u r.

the rear end on my truck hops all over the place
every night I have to drive over this bridge that is about 50 ft above a river it has a turn right before the bridge arches start with only a gaurd rail to keep u on the road. there is a section in that turn that is split pretty bad. every time i go over it i picture myself hopping over the rail to a watery landing
it would be a sight to see tho...
Biggreen, that's where my 79 went, the "yard" mounts came off a parts truck I had in the back yard, or you can hit a junkyard. Just have to look the parts over carefully. At $42 a pop I think I'll go look at another parts truck before it gets scrapped.
The shock mounts on my '77 are homemade. I would think anyone with a welder and some scrap (and some decent skills) would be able to piece some together for you. Beats paying through the nose at your local dealership.
I replaced the ones on my 86 ford pickup for 10 bucks a side direct from ford. these are diffenent as far as how the shock mounts, but if you are replacing your shocks anyways this is the way to go. And they will bolt right up to the factory locations.
Unless yours have already been replaced in the past, these are riveted onto the frame from the factory. Its a little bit of work to get the old ones off the frame but it isnt that big of a deal.
I recently replaced the upper shock mounts on my '79 F250 for the same reason - rusted out so bad they broke and was driving with the top of the shocks floppin' in the breeze.
Ford dealer quoted me $70 (Canadian) a piece.
Instead I called a few wreckers and found a '79 f250 in a yard. They said it wasn't worth their while pulling chassis parts usually, but I wanted a number of pieces off the truck in their yard so they did it for $20 each. This chassis was in great shape.
As far as getting the old ones off, my angle-grinder with a cutting wheel took the heads off the original rivets in about 5 minutes. A few good whacks with a short sledge and a punch, and they were off. Got grade 5 chassis bolts from a big-rig shop nearby to bolt the 'new' brackets back on.
In 2001, the right mount on my 77 rusted off at the frame like yours did. I went to the local ford dealer and got a brand new one for $38. It was an in stock part and the parts guy said it's the same part as is used on newer model trucks. The part number is
