Question Gears

How do I determine the gears I have. I have heard something about counting the teeth. Is there some kind of formula to it?

Open up your drivers side door
Look at the tag there with engine, axle, vin, weights, etc. Look for axle code and get htat number. Then look in your owners manual. Also post up hereif you want. If its just numbers you have an open rear end, if its a letter with a number then you're packing a Trac-Lok. 18 I know is 3.08 - what I have ::cries::. I have a 3.08 open third member. My grandpa told me the damn thing was limited slip, and I know that I've left two sided marks as well..so..must be a freak thing or something. Maybe the old owner put in.

As far as counting, you take the big number(ring) and divide it by the little number(pinion). For example, I have 41 and 10 which equals 4.10.

Easiest way to check rearend ratio is to jack up one tire, place truck in neutral and block the tires and spin it one revolution while you count the revolutions the pinion turns. The revolutions the pinion turns is the ratio. If you can't turn the tire then you have a locker. Jack up the other tire. To tell if you have a limited slip remove the back cover a see if there are disk on the sides of the carrier. If there are you have a limited slip if not it is open.

That won't work very well. With an open rear you have to spin the jacked up rear wheel through 2 full turns and count the driveshaft revs because the differential is splitting the difference between the moving wheel and the stationary wheel. If he has a trac-lok, then he'll need to have both rear wheels off the ground and only rotate the wheel through one rev.
