98 explorer accelerator pedal

The range of motion on my accelerator pedal seems to have shortened. The pedal seems to be sitting lower, and it will go to the floor while I'm trying to accelerate onto a highway or up a hill. Is there an adjustment up at the end of the throttle cable ? Anybody familiar with this ?:-(

98 explorer accelerator pedal

I had a similar issue with my old '98 Explorer Ltd. Look to see if there is a TSB on the issue. Anyways, what happened on mine was that the bracket that holds the pedal was only spot welded to the firewall. Apparently a couple of the spot welds broke loose and the pedal was actually bent to the side, thus reducing the range of motion. I thought it felt a little weird until finally the pedal braket just snapped off completely while I was driving it!!! Anyways, I ended up using the cruise and carefully drove it to the dealer. They obviously acknowledged the issue and proceeded to bolt the pedal bracket to the firewall. (Note - on mine, there were two holes in the pedal bracket and two pilot holes in the firewall were it should have be mounted to begin with.) If you are out of warranty, you might want to crawl in there this weekend and bolt the pedal down before it breaks off. Otherwise I would take it back to the dealer and have them take care of it. Hope this helps!
