Exclamation Speedo

I went to Autozone to get a replacement and they gave me a speedo that screwed into the tranny and it didn't work. Then they gave me one with a metal tab that bolted on the tranny and it worked and they told me that my tranny was a medium duty instead of light. It worked fine as long as I was under 30 miles an hour but bounced some now it doesn't even move. I think that the plastic gear in the tranny might have worn out but if anyone knows what might be wrong let me know.

Huey,

"They gave me a speedo that screwed into the tranny and it didn't work". I don't quite understand that statement, but I assume you mean you bought a speedometer cable and housing assembly and it didn't work.

If your truck has the removable nylon speedometer gear (not sure what year your truck is or when they started using the nylon gears), you can remove and inspect it. They are usually held in place with a small 1/4 inch bolt and are sealed with a rubber O-ring. A small amount of fluid will come out so be prepared for that. If the cable and the housing are new and you know the speedometer head is okay, the nylon gear is about all that's left that could be bad unless the gear in the transmission itself that turns the nylon gear is bad and they seldom go bad...

Make sure the nylon gear you require is a right-twist or a left-twist. There are also a number of different spline-counts on the nylon gears, too (you can physically count the number of splines on your speedo gear just like you can on rear end gears). Also, when you re-install the new speedo mechanism (the part that bolts to the tranny housing with the 1/4" bolt), make sure the mechanism (speedo gear, rod, rubber seal and cap) snaps into place and seats itself before you tighten down the bolt.

If yours IS a nylon speedo gear and you have the old one, make SURE you get the same spline-count replacement. They are usually color-coded. Also make sure the "twist" goes in the same direction as the original you're replacing. If you know the year and vehicle the tranny is out of, the Ford dealership guys or the NAPA guys should be able to reference the exact speedo gear you need for your tranny.

Keep us posted and we'll keep checking this thread...

Good luck,
