Failed emissions on high CO
It's an '86 carbueratored F-150. The CO readings are 2.58 and the limits here are 1.50
I'm not all that great with carbuerators, so I had a friend adjust it before I took the test. He says he leaned out the mixture for me. Now, since the CO is high, should I just lean it out more with the idle mixture screw, or do you think there could be some other problem?
Thanks.
Do they test just at idle, or is it a running test? If anything other than idle, the idle mixture screw alone won't take care of it.
Your biggest problem is most likely your stock POS feedback carb/TFI ignition combo. If they don't do a very thorough underhood visual test, you can swap on a Carter YF and duraspark ignition system from a mid 70's truck, still look stock to most people, and have much better luck, even though that setup wasn't "designed" for as stringent of emissions specs.
The mid 80's system is known for complexity and likeliness to fail.
