locker strength

i know i ask some dumb questions sometimes but this is just something I was curious about... i know lockers essentially keep both tires spinning traction or not, but does a locker actually make your rear/front end stronger? Or it just for functionality. Also I've heard about these things called "trusses" can someone let me know how they work what they look like etc.?

a locker is just for function. it will actually make your axle weaker because your spinning both shafts underpower at the same time. my d60 will last forever with my open diff and 33" tires but once I start putting 40" tires and a locker on there I'm gonna expect to break alot sooner than without it. Hope this made sense.

puts more strain on the ring/pinion/axle shafts etc, but if it replaces the carrier, it beefs up that area a bunch because you dont have the weak stock carrier any more

I don't know if the weak stock carrier was ever an issue anyway, but the locker definitely won't be the one to break. It will be something like u-joints, the axle shaft, driveshaft... but not the locker. So, does it increase strength or point out weaknesses?

I would say a locker will point out weaknesses, especially if you are barreling around a corner and romp on the gas. Weak axleshafts will have a hard time as will U-joints.

Trusses are designed to strengthen the axle tubes. They are more usefull in a rig that will be catching air and hitting hard, to prevent the axle tubes from bending up or breaking. Trusses come in all different shapes and styles from basic to bling. A lot of time they'll cost you some clearance.

oh I have a sterling 10.25 and don't really ever catch air, the only non-pavement pounding i do is just like ruts and stuff an off-road magazine would laugh at. (hey gimme a break the nearest off-road area is like 3 hrs away.) so a truss would more or less just be for looks?

yeah you wouldn't need a truss in your case.

Yeah Thompson, you don't need a truss with a Sterling. If you manage to break that you need Rockwells.

Btw, you'll notice most offroad mags love trusses and pavement pounding trucks. I think you'll be just fine since you actually USE your truck.
