Anyone mount a winch on a ranger. I already got the winch, just wanted to see some pics. It is a 5000 lb. winch (sliding mass). I dont want to spend the money for a new bumper.
Ive already take off the front valance and tow hooks. I think i can use the holes where they were. Im going to my grandpa's house this weekend, and ill have all the tools and materials to fabricate my own mount. Just need a few tips or ideas to get me on the right track.
If you already have a Class 3 trailor hitch on the back, you should consider making your front mount similar. With some extra wiring, you can use the winch on both ends of your truck.
AL.
I dont have a reciever on the back, but already had plans for making a way to mount it to both ends. I havent finalized any ideas yet because i dont know exactly what kind of metal my grandpa has. Hopefully he has some pretty thick angle iron around 3/8 or so. I think i can use the holes for the tow hooks then mount the hooks to the winch frame. I really wish i had a digi camera so i could show you what im talking about.
Hidden Hitch make a front receiver hitch for Ranger that is less than $100. JCW has them in the towing section. They also sell the adaptor plates for the winch. This is the set up I'm planning to use when I get the money.
Thats basically the set up im going to use, but since my uncle is a professional welder, we're just going to make it Then put on a black "hamered paint" or something.
I heard to bolt and not to weld tow hooks on because the weld can break and send it flying. You think i should also bolt all the seams? And what grade bolts would work?
The bolts that held my tow hooks on say "abc 109" on them. No other marks.... anyone know what grade they are. I couldn't find it with my yahoo search.
Good bolts are better than weld for offroad and pulling winches. Consider the sheer forces and trail flex. After a few years of hard use you can replace bolts and restore integrity.
I just got home from my grandpa's. Ill try to get some pics if i can. We ended up welding the bracket together and bolting it to the frame of my truck. I used 6 grade 8 bolts to hold it to the frame, and 8 more to hold the winch to the mount we made. I tied it to a tree in my driveway and set the P-brake. It easily held up.
As for the tow hooks, they are mounted on the front of the mount with the original bolts that held them to the frame. The mount ismade of 3/8 inch hardened steel.

It really looks and performs well... so far.
Dont do a double pull with your tow hooks{ cable out to tickler then back to the to hooks} You will be pulling on the same mounting point on your truck, VERY VERY DANGEROUS!! !You can pull the mount off the truck and I dont went to see a winch and mount flying at me!!
Other then that sounds like y'all did a great job.
Well its mounted to where both the tow hooks were, and to the both sides of the frame. So it attaches to the frame truck in 4 places. I tested it today against a tree in my driveway. It slid the truck on the concrete with the parking brake on. Then it stopped. I think i had a loose connection. It will only go one way, but if i wire it backwards it works fine. I think a solenoid went out, but thats an easy fix. tomorrow im going to paint it if it doesnt rain. And then slap a FORD sticker on it. Im gonna have to trim the front valance a little, but everyone at work said it looked awesome.
Now i wont have n excuse for coming home a few hours late withmy girl. the ol' "I got stuck" wont stick anymore.
When you stick you truck your pulling about twice as much weight{double the weight of your truck} to get it out.do some seacching on the web on how to use a winch .They are a great thing to have but the can HURT/KILL you to.so please find someone to show you how to uese it or look on the net for help/If I can fint the links Ill post them here.Im not calling you dumb I just went you to come home to that sweet girlfriend you got.PLEASE BE SAFE!!!
Yeah, I would definately pickup a winch kit or something, with a tree-saver, ****** blocks, gloves, chain, etc. Using a snatchblock basicly reduces the load on the winch in half, though it will move slower I believe. Also, make sure there is a coat/towel/floormat over the winch lead when you use it. I'm sure you know these things but it's good to have a reminder. Good luck, and get us some pictures of the mount soon!
