fried 390

I recently purchased a 390 long block from local rebuild shop. I replaced the 360 that was my a 75 F350.It blew the head gasket on #1 side in about 3 days. I took the head back to them, they checked it (ok),gave me a new gasket and I put it together. I ran it for another two weeks, the #1 cylinder went dead. I pulled the head and the 1st and 2nd pistons are fried and when i pulled the pan off three skirt pieces were in it from the three front pistons on that side. I had trouble with timing from the word go, the rebuilder said that it should run on unleaded even with .060 bore and shaved heads. The block had ridges on it like it may have been shaved too. They say they will warranty it but it is taking them a few days to get another on redone. The block I turned in was good so they may redo it. Does it sound like timing or too lean fuel?

sounds like a bad build and you should run a higher octane too

I agree with gashog. I demand a refund though! what a pile, a chevy builder could have done better!

I really hope you were being sarchastic.

This is exactly the crap I would expect from a chevy builder. Get your money back and find a different shop, or better yet, get the book and do it yourself. Like they say, "If you want anything done right, you've got to do it yourself!"

they warranted it. They gave me a 360,which is the same size as i had. I have been running it hard for 5 months now. I have a new post about rpms going now
