Hey Guys I had a question. I have a 2000 SD with Manual Tranny and sometimes when I upshift or give it gas and release I hear a klunking sound. It doesn't do it when I first start out (initial load) but rather when I shift up to subsequent gears or like I said give and release gas in one gear. I tried to turn the driveshaft in gear to see if it was the u-joints but it didn't move. Is this the correct way to check if it is the u-joints or is this noise normal? Thanks for any input
You need to grease the slip joint in the drive shaft (splines )
use teflon grease from Ford .
yes u-joints can be chk like that.
Also you could have excess backlash in the rear dif.
Backlash = the specification given for mesh of the gearrs in the rear diff .
its measured with a dial indicator in thousands of an inch.
In the rear diff you have a ring gear and a pinon gear ,they are setup from the factory to a specification on how they mesh together. I could get alot more technical ,but i think you get the picture.
