I have a 92 explorer with a 4.0 automatic after two or more days of not being driven the battery goes dead. I tried to figure it out using a test light, i dont have a volt meter, but the E.E.C.seems to be what is draining the battery, that and the radio clock but the light is very dim after unpluging the E.E.C. fuse. Also after unhooking the negative battery terminal and hooking it back up I hear what i think is a relay clicking on. Does anyone know how to check the E.E.C. with a voltmeter to see if it is drawing too much? Any ideas? Thanks Jesse
Sounds like the classic bad fuel pump relay. The 91 - 94 Explorers are notorious for fuel pump relays going out and draining your battery. The relay is lcoated under the power distribution box under the hood. I went thru 2 batteries before I was able to isolate it. There are 4 or 5 relays under the box so I pulled them all and replaced them one by one until the battery went dead again. I purchased a new relay from Ford (about $7) and it has worked great for well over a year now...
hey, my 93 explorer might be doing the same thing, it was like this, one day the battery was fine, the next it was suddenly dead and i got it jumped and it seemed to work fine again for a while until it went dead again like a month later. i jumped it again and now it has a hard time trying to start, it has been doing this for about the last week, so even though the battery is fairly new, i went shopping for one today, just figuring that it was time to get a new one. how do i know if it is one of these relays, and is there an easy way to test them so that if it is one of them that's causing the problem i can get it fixed before i put in a new battery? thanks
