Check Engine light

PO455 is set most often when the engine is restarted with the fuel cap left off . If thats not been the case then go over all the evap lines to make sure none are loose , damaged or missing .

Check Engine light

I reset the computer and I have not had anymore problems with it. So I am guessing that it was the fuel gap, and for some reason the PCM never reser itself.

If you have run out of gas lately, then this light will come on and stay on until your disconnect the terminals on your battery. Then it will clear out. Even if you haven't run out of gas, disconnect the terminals to clear the light and see if it comes back on. This will be a good indication that there is something indeed wrong.

Check Engine light

I found the negative battery terminal corroded, cleaned it, rinsed and replaced. It cleared the codes and no more engine light.

Check Engine light

The check engine light has recently come on on my 97 SOHC XPlorer. I went to AutoZone for the diagnostic test and it read PO430 Catalytic System Efficiency. The guy at the store said that running fuel injector cleaner through it for about an hour should do the truck. Is this accurate? Can anyone help?

The $25 scanner you bought at Walmart will not read the OBD-II codes from a '96 and up Explorer. Only an OBD-II scanner will do that and they are much more costly than the OBD-I scanners. OBD-II data is put out in a serial data form that requires a computer capable of reading it in the proper form. OBD-I just puts out a pulse signal that can be read with a $25 scanner or even an analog multi-meter. Trying to read an OBD-II code with an OBD-I scanner would get you about as far as hooking it up to your modem and trying to connect to the internet with it.

Here is what's happening. P0455 means the PCM ran an evap test and did not see the fuel tank pressure sensor drop down so it ASSUMES you have a gross leak. Here are the things that can cause that code. (going from bumper to bumper) No vacumn to the purge valve, bad or stuck purge valve, restricted vapor lines, bad FTP sensor, bad or stuck canister vent solenoid, bad or loose fuel cap. I get these all day long at my Dealership. Odds are the vapor management valve is stuck or sticks but as you can see it could be a lot. If the lite returns I can give you some diag. tips. It could be tough at home though.

Check Engine light

There seems to be a lot of knowlege on this subject here . . .
Can a 96 4L be tested the shade tree way? (jumping conections)
I recently bought this Explorer and the CEL is on for the second time.
The first time it went off after a few days, before I got around to finding out what it was. Any insight would be greatly appriciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Sep-02 AT 10:34 PM (EST)]No, beginning in '96 on the Explorer, Ford went t OBD-II. The only way to read the codes is to have them scanned. The older OBD-I sytems could be jumpered to retrieve your DTCs through your CEL.

BTW, Autozone will read your codes for free.

Check Engine light

I have a 1995 Ford Explorer that frequently displays the "check engine" light. Seems to run fine. I pulled the Key off OBD-I code of 214 which has something to do with the cylinder identification circuit failure. I have all the Helm's ford service manuals as well as the electrical circuit book and can't find anything on the circuit identification circuit. Anyone know the most likely cause for this code or how to track it down?
