Hi there, I have just acquired an 84 f-150 reg cab 300 cid auto. This truck is in awesome shape and I just want to know if it's possible to put an overdrive automatic trans from a newer truck into this one. The whole truck was virtually rebuilt 4 yrs ago. I know this cause the previous owner was a friend of mine who can't drive it anymore. I would also appreciate knowing if it's a hard swap or if a saturday mechanic can deal with this one. Thanks for any possible responces
what tranny is in it now and how new of a tranny do you want to swap in some of the AOD's will easily work with an older motor. I don't know if the bellhousing would match.
It's just a regular C-6, So others tell me, and as far as how new a transmission I want to put in it, I'll hunt around for whatever type and year works best for this truck. It's not a 4X4 and all I want to do is tow a light boat trailer and pack around my wife and Dogs. As far as what I want to spend, whatever I sell my 91 ranger for goes into this pickup. Thanks for your reply's
I'd take the C6 anyday over any OD transmission as far as duribility goes, and in my mind wouldn't be worth the money. But like said and AOD wouldn't be that hard to swap in, you can't put in a E4OD or any other electronic transmission without extensive modification though.
Personally, I'd go for the AOD, if you are only doing light occasional towing. They can be beefed without spending big bucks, and be reliable. The OD would allow going to a lower rear gear, resulting in better acceleration and possibly better mileage too. However, if you plan on any serious towing stick with the C6.
Thanks for all your help guys, and yes it will be for light occasional towing and hauling my damm dogs around lol. I also understand that an electronic tranny will require a lot of modification. I'll just see what my budget allows when it's time and go from there.
