Question for the pros
This question is for the professional painters and bodyworkers. I have a 03 Expy XLT with the lower exterior gray textured cladding. I have been thinking about painting them to match the body color. Is there anything in the paint and body world that fills in or smooths out the textured surface of the cladding before paint is applied? And if not is there a good adhesive promoter that will reduce or eliminate the possibility of the paint from chipping, cracking, or flaking the first time it gets bumped or I take it to the car wash?

My advice is to scuff the plastic with a red scuff pad, clean with a good plastic prep and then prime with a plastic primer and then paint and clear with three good coats of clear. I know this sounds like a long procedure, but it is well worth it and it lasts. Last step is to wetsand entire surface smoothe with 600 grit paper and reclear. You may need to put one more coat of paint before clear depending on how much you sand. I have done many trucks like this and it will last forever. And look great

I would try to identify the type of substrate. Then see if your
paint manufacturer has specs on coating that material. Most
of them will have you add a plasticiser. It takes about twice
as much work as you would normally think.
