I'm curious about the amount of play I have with my shifter. It's an M5OD behind a 300. I have quite a bit of play in my gears, more then any other vehicles that I've driven. Is it that the shifter linkage has become worn, or loosened up? Is it possible to tighten that up without completely replacing it? Or could it be the synchronizers? Or what? I'm really not sure of what it could be - hence I put it before the knowledgable people here. Thank you..
It wouldn't be hard to just open up the shifter just to see what you're getting yourself into... I think when you do that you'll be surprised how simple a M5OD shifter really is. Read the: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...07#post1594607
thread and all the "clickable" link within the thread, then when you open up the shifter boot/cover it will all be clear to you... if you get uncomfortable with the work (I doubt you will)... just close it back up... nothing tricky or special tools needed (a common torx driver needed). Just keep the screws/bolts away from the opening and try not to drop anything down there. A trans repair shop will likely charge you about 2 hours labor and full Ford retail on parts... anywhere from $150-$250 total and like I said in the thread... I did it for under $25 (if you need a new cover plate add $30-$40).
good luck... BTW... what kind of vehicle is it in?
*Bump* If you could give me a bit more information on what'll happen, I'd be really thankful. At least enough that I can explain to my grandpa and have him help me with it ^_^.
Oh..did I have to go to the dealer to get the parts, or just to Autozone/Orielly's/Napa/etc? Would they be able to pull the parts up on their screen, or..?
I'd really like to get a firmer shifter...kinda weirds me out the way it is currently.
