I purchased my 56 truck in pieces. The guy had torn it apart 15 years ago and stuck it in a shed. There are no nuts and bolts at all.... I stuck a few pieces togther from leftover nuts n bolts that I had in my tool box but that wont cut it and come close to the amount that I need.
1. What is a good source? (im thinking an ice cream bucket and a trip to the wreckers)
2. Has anyone used j-nuts 0r j-clip and bolts? (j-nut I think Is the name of the clip that works the same as a nut, It just snaps into the bottom hole of the 2 pieces being put together, and the bolts have a washer pressed on next to the head.)
I can't see how it is that big of deal really. I've been getting bolts from my local farm store. Grade 5 bolts for $1.97 per pound. All different sizes and such. I ordered a total front end bolt kit from Mid Fifty, and after I got them, I felt a little jipped. There was nothing special about the bolts other than the nyloc nuts. I think I would have save $30 by just going down to the local farm store, which is what I have been doing since buying the "kit"
Farm store bolts are plenty strong. But your gut reaction is a good one too. Factory bolts from the wrecking yard are cheap, and great quality with built in washers and often quality plating. They tend to rust a lot less than farm store bolts. Avoid J-nuts where you can. Especially on the front clip. They scratch the new paint bad and are just a rust trap. It only takes a little longer to use a washer and nut instead. Stainless bolts are another good option.
Thanks for the help guy's. I can get stainless nuts bolts and washers for wholesale through work. Now I'll have to start counting all those empty holes.
Not only does stainless look good, but if you ever have to take it apart down the road it's not nearly as hard. I took my front clip apart after 10 years, originally put back together with new grade 5 hardware, and they'd already rusted together, with a bunch of them twisting in half rather than coming loose.
