I wanna know how long you all think the 99+ 4.2 will last if u keep the oil changed, Ive heard of some making it to the 250,000 mark, is this a common occurance or what???
Oh I have no doubt that the 4.2 Liter will pump out some miles....I don't know about the Mazda transmission or clutch making that far though...I had 210,000 on my 5.0 Olds and it was still running strong, so I hope to get atleast that out of my 4.2! That is if I don't trade it in for a 2004 Mustang GT Coupe(metallic blue, leather seats, 5spd, 260hp 4.6)......just kidding...In my dreams maybe...Don't have the money....
Strick,
Honestly, I expect to see my truck roll right past 200,000 and experience few - if any - significant problems.
The plan is to give the truck to my son when he turns 16. He is 12 now. Unless I buy something different between now and then, which I don't plan to do, It should have about 250,000 on it when he turns 16.
A bit optimisitc on my part? Well, maybe. But I don't really think so.
Sure stuff will wear out and have to be replaced, but so far, this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. (including Chevy, Pontiac, Jeep, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Buick).
131,000 miles and still have original back brakes and no clucth needed so far.
Honestly, if you could reset the odometer to 12,000 miles, the truck would pass as only having 12,000 miles.
I have replaced the shocks and kept it greased so the ride is still good. Nothing has fallen off or worked loose. It burns no oil in 5000 mile drain intervals. Engine compartment is really clean and kept looking nice with spray silicone. Nothing leaks, NOTHING,
All said, it would be unreasonable to expect any more form a $16,500 truck. And it has been used as a truck. Not abused, but used.
I wonder who has the most miles on a 4.2 anyways? Maybe a sticky message at the top asking
a) model year
b) mileage
c) any engine work required beside routine maintenance?
First 70,000 miles was with Formula Shell 10W-30
Then I switched to Chevron 10W-30.
Wal Mart no longer carries Chevron so I am now using Havoline 10W-30.
Depending on how the UOA turns out for the Havoline, I'll stick with it or go searching for the Chevron elsewhere.
While it is good oil, I don't use synthetic. Not sold on its value in my application.
I have always used Motorcraft filters.
Brian, Havoline is a pretty decent oil. You shouldn't have any problems with it. I worked at an express lube and that was their featured oil, and almost every vehicle that used it got good...'cleanage' for lack of a better word.
Oh yea, and do the sticky!
Guys, come on...you don't remember this thread and my problem that all started with installing taylor aftermarket plug wires. Here this will refresh your memory
