New Brake Controller Setup

I have a brand new 2004 F350, 6.0 auto. I am going to be installing a new Prodigy brake controller this weekend and then using it when I haul my 8000# loaded trailer (2000# empty). Installing the controller should be easy enough, just wanted to know about the best way to get it initially setup and adjusted. Should I use it first with just the empty trailer and then try with it loaded? Any tips would be appreciated. I am new to the heavy towing world and not sure what to expect. Thanks in advance.

The Prodigy controller is A great unit, It comes with very good instructions on how to set it. It only takes about ten minutes of driving to get it set.

I agree. The instructions are straightforward and easy to follow. I would set it up with the trailer loaded. Actually I didn't follow my own advice though. I set up my Prodigy with my horse trailer empty, because I didn't want to make abrupt stops with horses while setting it up. So set up empty, it works fine with the extra weight of horses in it. I don't think it's that big a deal. During set up you're basically finding the point at where the brakes start to lock, then back it off.
