It just started today... while doing the normal drive down the road to work, the rpm's kept jumping, and while (automatic) shifting from 2-3 or 3-4, she would rev up close to 3k before shifting, or she'd jump down from 4-3 pushing the rpm from 2k to 3k... I'm not a mechanic, I just wanna know what might be wrong with my baby before I bring her in to get looked at!
I checked the transmission fluid, and its at a good level.. it didnt smell burned and didnt look an odd color. I've just kind of taken it real easy the past couple of days, no insane accelerations and just taking my time going up through the gears. (It really ****es off these Virginia drivers, plus she's got 107k miles on her, gotta be gentle!) It hasn't slipped at all since the day I posted. Though, like the two folks who have responded so far, none of the truck-guys I have talked to seem to know what might be the problem... mystery...

Hey, I too have a '97 Expedition with (believe it or not) 107,000 miles!. It has the 5.4L engine, 4x4, 3.73 limited slip diff. A couple months ago, my tranny did exactly the same thing - for just a few times on one day. Then it quit and hasn't done it again. I checked the same things and all seems fine. I thought about changing the tranny fluid and any accessible filters, but ditched that thought since everything is working fine. I've continued to use the truck as usual. I don't intend to do anything unless it acts up again. Maybe just some kind of electronic "burp"?
Hey Dan-N-Jehnn, when was your last tranny fluid change? This is very important in these tranny's, they are very good, but any dirt can mess them up. The micro-wear particles can build up and restrict flow. In case you don't know, your tranny pan has a small magnet in it to pick up these particles. It sits dead center of the pan just below the filter. If you haven't changed your fluid (every 25-30,000 maximum) this could be your problem.
The exact thing happened to my wife two weeks ago. We have a 97 and strangely enough it had 107K and change on it at the time. It happpened twice within two minutes. I took it to tranny shop the next day, where they serviced and changed filter, but said that they saw nothing wrong. No excessive metal, no burnt fluid, all looked fine. It has not happened again.
