I recently purchased a 93 7.3 IDI no turbo, 4X4, F250 supercab. It has some sort of electricial plug under the steering column with a plug in it with prongs on it. It looks like the thing you unplug on newer fords that will prevent the truck from running. the truck runs the same with or without the plug. Like a bat outta hell. there are 4 wires and two are cut off. the other two dissappear into the dash and . some wires run to a box with a circuit board in it laying loose behind the glove box. It has a small red light in the dash that is cut and there was a switch or button under the steering wheel. The feul pump must be turned up because it has some toxic fumes at idle. I getting around 16MPH all the time. Any ideas. I can send pics.
Sounds like something aftermarket was installed, then half way removed with parts and wires still left on the truck.
Some people can not stand the smell of diesel exhaust while it does not bother others.
The fuel turned up has very little to do with fuel delivery at idle.
When you are out on the highway running 60 MPH and put your throttle on the floor, what does the exhaust look like behind you?

No smoke on acceleration. When I run it up to 3200 RPM it lets out a puff of white smoke when I shift. Dual exhaust.
I figured it was aftermarket stuff but was wandering what it might be. I also found a red box about 2X3 inches under the hood with six wire connections and is appears unhooked also.
And the smell at idle is like no deisel I have ever smelled. We have a 95, 97, 99, 00, 02, PSD's at work and it is not even close to the same smell.
Something has been done to this truck I am told because I can run with any turbo deisel up to about 65MPH. Sometimes I am faster.
this may sound funny but dealers had those things installed to prevent customers from driving away from the car lots .when the vehicle was sold they disconnected them ..sounds like what you have.
I grew up with diesle farm tractors and the 84 Ford 6.9 that my dad bought new, and love the smell, although many think they stink, guess I.m addicted, Check me in......
I've heard that if the intake and exhaust are opened up on the pre-strokes, they will put out as much as a stock power stroker. That is without turning up the fuel. You may have had that and other things done. Just think what a Banks or ATK? turbo would do. I think the ATK? also has an intercooler option which banks doesn't . A full Banks kit w/wastegate will jack a IDI up to 500 (rear wheel) lb/ft at 1500 rpms. Plus the Idi seems to be the most fuel efficient of the ford diesels.
It is not so much the smell but the fact the fumes will burn your eyeballs out of their sockets.
It runs like a bat outta hell. I bought the truck on a blind chance hoping it would work out. I feel sorry for the sucker who let it go. It weighs 7,900 lbs with tools in the bed. A 3" lift, 33X12.5X16.5 AT tires. 5 speed OD tranny. It will burn the rear tires when I ask it to. Not too often but sometimes the urge hits me. I can't wait to get an AT turbo on it this winter. I don't know what was done to this truck but I live in the ozark mountains and can hit a 50-60% grade at 80 MPH and hit the top 1/4 mile later at 70MPH. On a cool night I don't loose speed. I need to find a way to get it cool fresh air. The paint job prevents a hood scoop.
