How do I use a code reader?

Auto Zone could not read on my 94 f150.
Also I should have already replied, I used the test light and the codes came up clear as day. The O2 sensor, the mechanic could not even get it to pull with his code reader.
I also got a code the was operator error, which I probally caused during test procedure.

Thank you for clearing this up for me. I spent much of my time trying to find the code hookup that was described to me on that fordfuelinjection site, only to find that it didn't work for 96 and up trucks, stupid me.
I'm gonna go ahead and buy a OBD-II code reader off of ebay considering I'm not the only one with a vehicle that is 96 and up.
Me - 96 F-150 XL
Father - 96 Chevy Tahoe
Mother - 99 Plymouth Voyager
Girlfriend - 98 Zx2
Do you think a voltmeter would help after the code is read?

I agree that the Auto Zone free read works great. On some codes you can only get the problem from a dealer. Had one on a 99 Olds that the dealer supposedly couldn't tell me what it was. I raised hell, and told them that they couldn't tell me if it was a warranty code, or how to fix it until they could read it, so how "DO YOU FIND OUT?!!!" A call to the district or wherever all of a sudden got the problem definition and then a solution.
