i am doing the unthinkable i am going to pick and pull to go get a engine for 75.00 what should i check for in the engine help me i will be putting all new bearings and rings in but no machine work if i can get away with that.
good luck with no machine work........unless you can perform a simple hone yourself but i in no way endorse that. No it's not impossible people do it all the time, junkyard jewels hotrod magazine. Its a gamble untill you get it home and mic it out, unless they test there engines before selling ive seen that too but there not 75 bucks there like 150 or 250.
The possibility of an engine needing no machine work to be put back into a serviceable condition is very unlikely. Most FEs had well over 200,000 miles before being laid to rest. At a very minimum you would need to have the bores honed with the correct grit for the type of rings you choose to use.
Personally I love Junk Yards! And an engine from Pick and Pull can be a bargan. I got a set of heads and a 4.05 bore block with 390 crank for less than 100 bucks. If you are lucky and careful you may get an engine that will run for years. I look for later model pickups that were wrecked. To me this indicates they were running when parked. Ditto about the Core only comment.
i would try to find an engine you think you can hear run, if not one that at least turns over. look for one that isn't been picked through for parts, and not a big ball of grease ! as william said look for one in a wrecked vehicle. most of the time thats the reason its in there.
Pulling the heads and oil pan would be a good idea. Try and move the rods on the crank; if they move the bearing is gone and you need to look at a different engine. Look for one with the hood down so things aren't full of water.
Right on bro thats cool just looks like alot of hassle, but then again you dont wanna send the block off so its worth it. I would at least make sure that its not siezed....at the minnimum.
