How common was Full-Time 4WD?

I was just curious if this was a rare option in 78-79 or did a lot of trucks have it back then. Anybody out there have it on their truck?

I have it, though it has been converted to part time.

Seems like they are about half and half around here. Although most of the full times have been switched to part time...

Spotted another 78 fulltime 4WD today in town. Thats two I have seen around here. Is the conversion difficult to do? I know where there is a rusted out part time 4WD 79 F150 with a good drivetrain. If I decided to swap down the road would a tranfer case swap be the easy way to go?

I have a 78 supercab that im putting together. When I looked in my 78 glove box manual, the diagram of the dash layout shows a 4wd light on the dash.

My question is how do you know (other than driving the truck) that you have a full time 4wd.

Thanks for your time

There is a big metal cap on the front hub instead of a "turn dial"

Big metal cap on the front hub (if not converted); "lock" light under dash below the cigarette lighter; shift pattern F-R: L Loc/L/N/H/H Loc.
Oh and a big honking NP203 behind the C-6 (FT 4WD only came with the Cruise-o-matic).

WOW, out here I have NEVER seen a full time 4by ford of this vintage.. Thought they only came in cruddy Dodges.... Now is this only for half tons?? I dont see a 203 holding up to much more than that. ( Obviously proud owner of the gear driven 205..)

Both 1/2 and 3/4 T had the option, in fact the 79 1 ton 350 could be had with FT 4WD.
Ford didn't sell near as many as Dodge and Chevy.
