Well I'm sure this is a controversial subject. SO, going to pull my engine due to Ye-Old cracked head syndrome. And as we all know the upper oiling system left a lot to be desired. Are there any "tested" methods of improving this? I'd like to try and get another 150K outa this thing without any more suprises. Heads have been replaced with World Products castings, so we should have no more nonsense from there.
Run a good synthetic in it & you should'nt have any oil system probs. I've used Amsoil 10-40 in my 87 2.9 since 5K miles & now have 223K miles & have never had the noisy lifter probs that the 2.9 is famous for & the engine has never been worked on. Since I drive mostly highway miles I change it every 12K. When I changed valve cover gaskets at 180K the heads & valve covers were spotless.
I did a few oiling system mods when I went to the WP heads, replaced the lifters, still have some lifter noise that comes and goes. I got 1 bad lifter in the bunch, didn't find it till I was adjusting the valves, at that point I didn't want to pull the head back off so I figured it would pump up and be OK. WRONG! That's the one that I keep hearing. I don't know if the oiling system mods I did helped or not, but I sure wouldn't call them tried and true. -TD
With a bare block I would advise to bore out the 2 main oil passages above and below the camshaft bearings, and the 2 main passages going from the oil pump to the filter and from the filter to the lower main passage. These passages are a little small and any enlargement is a big help for the valvetrain.
