Can anyone tell me what the notes of the original horns were for the 66 F-100 series trucks? I don't find any references to pitch or freq. in the manuals. I expect they are on a beat frequency (dissonance) as opposed to harmonizing.
I'm wanting to replace the single horn currently installed with an original, dual horn configuration.
Wouldn't you know it's just one more thing... My harness is set up for two horns and it looks factory but only one horn is installed. Having said that, I don't see where the other horn would have mounted. The reason I thought the harness was correct is the horn relay and the first horn connection are on the driver's side. The spade lug has two wires with a factory-looking crimp and the second wire leads to a passenger side (existing) horn. I have tested that first lug and it is the horn circuit.
RD66,
By "66" Henry got a notion folk might be interested in more than Plane Jane F Series.
Although Henry had the "Custom Cab" option for some time by 66, it wasn't much until late 64 and then 65. . . By 1966 they had all kinds of goodies, the Ranger trim pkg w/ buckets & console, the 390 CID FE was available for those who whined & Moaned and you could get all kinds of "groups" like appearance, or comfort, or courtesy and so on.
By 66 seat belts, A/C, tinted glass, all sorts of stuff could be gotten if you coulld get into a sales & ordering manual. Also vehicles could be ordered in virtual custom configurations. So Henry made a lot of "fits alls" in the mid 60's. Harnesses are a good example of that practice.
FoMoCo figured it was cheaper to make harnesses with all possible combinations built rather than make special harness for each special combo. Thus we find our harnesses in our Slicks have wiring for many combinations on a V8 or an I-6 configuration basis.
You may find the "Dual Tone" Horn as an option in '66 sales brochures. Since FoMoCo uses "relay type" system you can add another horn to your slick. I ran a pair of horns from a '66 Lincoln Contenental "Suicude 4dr" sedan. I used a pair of horns from same vehicle to keep them in harmony. I think it sounds better than out of tune IMHO. Mine
sounded like Orange Blossom Special ripping thru central FL in 1940's & 1950's. . LOUD!
You can locate 2nd horn anywhere it fits or you want it by using a 5/16 tech screw, or self tapping bolt. Just make sure it has a good ground. It's plug & play too.
FBp
FBp, That's exactly what I'm after - the Cadillac had one of the most recognized horn duos that I can remember and Lincoln must be right there as well. I know sirens are designed to be in a frequency range that accelerate the heart rate and adrenaline and I would be surprised if some of the same research didn't go into the pairing of auto horns. I definately want more than the monotone "toot" I have now.
RD66
I knew that. It's Exactly why I shared it with ya! They move people who don't turn around to look until after they moved out of your way doncha see?
Now If I could only get those dual, 30", tuned, Air Trumpets off that Peterbilt up my street I could re-arrange traffic on I-4 here.....ya know what I mean? It'd be worth hanging an air compressor on my slick!
Steve, Ya should go to any car that you like the sound of and get both horns (Ford family of course) and install them on your truck (removing the existing) and be good to go.
FWIW another 12v horn relay will work off the same grounding circuit of your horn ring/button and you can power up 2 more horns for a total of 4 with i push of the button/ ring.
That'd be good for New Years Eve I bet. . . .
Little intersting story --- I bought a VERY expensive core support for my 65 of ebay. It arrived with a horn as well. My body guys painted everything, but only installed one horn. I tested the other horn, and it worked, so I decided it belonged on the other side. Indeed, my wiring has a connector for the second horn and my core support has the holes drilled in the right place.
BUT, in spite of my most special efforts, I cannot seem to get the second horn behind the grille. Its like one of those chinese nail puzzles. It looks like it should go in easy, but no, it refuses!!!!! I think taking out the radiator would make it work.
But in the end, I got smart and realized that I had 2 "low" horns anyhow, and hooking them both up probably wouldn't have gained me much. So I put the project on hold.
My favorite horns were the air trumpets my brother had on his 76 F-250. But unlike FBp's idea, he only had an air tank mounted on the frame rail with no compressor and you had to fill 'er up everytime you made 5 good blasts!
