I have a 1990 F250 4x4 with an E4OD that is on it's way out for the third time.
I like the truck and it's in good shape so I'd like to hold on to it, but I can't afford a $2500 tranmission rebuild every few years.
I see ebay has rebuilt E4ODs for around $900 or $2000 for a heavy duty rebuild. I'd appreciate any comments on these transmissions.
As far as changing the transmission, I've changed quite a few transmissions over the years, but nothing this big and heavy, so I could use a few pointers. I'll be working from under the truck, without a lift.
The factory manual says to take the transfer case and the transmission down as a unit. Is it possible and/or better to take the transfer case down first and then the transmission?
Also, the factory manual doesn't mention removing the exhaust system, but by eye this looks like a tight squeeze. Will the transmission come out without removing the crossover tube?
go with "phoenix rebuilt transmissions" on E-bay. as far as removal, do remove the rear tranny cross tube. also,to make things easy go up in the cab pull back carpeting over transmission hump and remove the floor pan. you'll have easy access to the upper tranny to engine bolts as well as cooler lines. no need to wedge your hand and wrench to disconect cooler lines. My son and I removed tranny and t/c as one. it is HEAVY but managable. also raise the front about 2 feet. maybe the rear too about a foot. just noticed yous is a f250 maybe no need to raise it up too far. mine is a f150 low rider 4x4, lol. had to get it up higher for clearing of tranny and transmission jack.
