I was going around a corner on a 4-lane road which leads to a bridge to cross the state line between Wisconsin and Michigan. It was slightly raining and I had my Mustang. I had it in 3rd and as I was going around the corner I gave it just a little gas to get it up to 40 or so. Car desides to be sassy and slides completely sideways and I went halfway into the other lane with lots of cars coming. So I crank it hard right hoping no one was along side of me and jerked it back over to the far right lane.........I'm still scared, and whiping up after myself.
Been there, done that.
Now that you know how lucky you just got, don't forget the lesson! That's why you see the old guys PUTTIN' down the road in their 427 Fairlanes. Been there, done that.
Don't forget to clean the drivers seat!
AL.
No, not a fun ride at all. I've done it on purpose on empty city streets but not nearly that bad and not even close to as scary. My friend was on his phone at the time and dropped in on the floor because it would have been his side to get hit. One week that car wins trophies and the next it's almost getting wrecked. I think I'm gonna keep it locked up for awhile after that one.
I had that happen alot with my 79 I had awhile back that I put a 351 in, had trouble keeping it straight sometimes. It would do it on dry pavement with some sand on it. Had it happen once with my 76 mustang 4 popper on snow and ice, didn't have time to make the mess. Got her straight, kicked into 3rd and nailed the gas to get the ___ll out of the way.
I did that once in my F-250 in the rain. I spun her completely around, lost lots of speed, but straightened it out in the middle of a 2 lane. Didn't hit anything, except the rev limiter on my heart. Whew!
Got another 'Me too' post, I was in my F250 just after it had been raining and had that slick film on the road. I was turning left at a stop light, just before I got straightened out I shifted into third (Start out in second, got a granny low) and popped the clutch. Danged if the back end didn't swing around sending me sideways, then over the median INTO the oncoming left hand turn lane. I was very fortunate there was no one sitting there, they would've been toast. I pulled past the median into the two-way turn lane and just sat there for a minute, waiting for my heart to start beating again. I've got a whole lot more respect for slick roads now!
The sad thing is is that I was coming home from a motorcycle safety course and they had just got done telling us about slick roads during the beginning of a rain. I guess it's better having it happen for the first time in a car rather than a bike. I learned.
mee too: my first car '74 chevy vega. my dad bought it from a neighbor who had bought it from the school district. had only a few thousand miles. but was riding on the OEM Bias Ply tires that were 10 years old. i kept telling my dad i needed new tires. it took losing control with him in the car for him to get me a new set.
(in my fathers defense: he is 80 now and has never learned to drive. i always said he didn't buy me a car, he bought a chaufer. he trusted the neighbor that it was a good car. )(grrrr)
Here's my "me too". In my '87 Crown Vic wagon (we nicknamed it the USS Iowa, it was grey), I was pulling onto Interstate 57 on a cold winter night, on one of those on-ramps that they build up like 50 or 60 feet. Well, once I was almost straight, I gave her some gas, and that beast proceeded to turn straight sideways and slide down the Inserstate at 50 MPH that way. I was looking out the window over the 50 foot drop, that DOT was nice enough not to install a guard rail on. Just before I thought I was gonna go over, I spun around some more and was facing the wrong way in the right hand lane looking right at a semi at about 400 yards. Uh oh. Lucky for me, the guy was paying attention, and managed to change lanes in a real hurry without jack knifing the thing, and to this day I thank him. The next vehicle by was a State Trooper that stopped and calmed me down after I got the car onto the shoulder and even gave me a couple cigarettes. I will never forget those semi lights coming right toward me.
Moral of the story... You never, EVER know where black ice is going to show up, so avoid it altogether, and move to the south..
I had one of them tractor trailors run me clear off the road and I ended up in a bank of dirt.. Thankfully noting became of it... He just came into my lane and pushed me right off the road. Needless to say I was mad fumeing!
Rancha9, I had a '72 Mercury Marquis with a 429 4v. I called it the Nimitz. It was big enough to launch aircraft off of the hood. Remember, everyone, when it first starts raining, it is the slipperyest. The water and oil film on the top of the road form an emulsion for a brief period of time. Be careful out there.
Our other, less popular name for it was the Death Star... Followed closely by Draggin' Wagon. Apparently when you raid a junkyard for cop car parts for your 302, it's gets pretty decently fast. Ain't nothing like burning some kid in a rice rocket in a gloriously old station wagon!
