They seemed to come out of nowhere. As a homeowner I try very hard to take care of my property, keep the grass mowed and the trash picked up. Now I have mounds of dirt appearing in my front yard! Moles! Frustrating little creatures, they are. Nothing seems to work to get rid of 'em. Anybody got any ideas?
I did a search on mole control, basically if you kill the grubs in the lawn, the moles will leave. Tried some grub-insect killer from Lowes, on our lawn in VA..it seems to be working..don't have all those mounds. Good luck, George
cpe41, I agree with glr. Kill the grubs, the moles lose interest. I have used Grub-ex from Scotts. It works and is necessary for a long term fix. However, this takes time. The fast way to get rid of the moles currently on your property is to buy a trap called "black hole". Do a Google search and find the best price. I have seen them advertised between $9.95 and $19.95 While you are waiting for the trap to arrive in the mail, go out on your lawn and walk on the mole runs and flatten them. Next day, look at which runs have risen. These are the active runs. When the trap arrives, put it in the active run. You may want to buy 2 traps, as they are directional. If you put it in the ground "backwards", the mole will burrow around it rather than go into it. It will take an extra day to turn the trap around so the trap will work. The black hole is the only mole trap I have even seen that works. By the way, moles are territorial and have a high metabolism. One or two moles can do a lot of damage are if you get one or two of them, your problem will probably be solved. Finaly, if you are lucky enough to see your grass move over one of the flattened runs, Jump on the spot and dig up the carcass.
Poison Peanuts which are sold at Wal-Mart or K-Mart out in the garden shop, use the active run theory by oldfordtrucker, stick some peanuts in there and no more moles.
The first house I owned had mole problems, and it's a tough problem to solve. I used a pinch trap which looked like two scissors seperated by a 5" spacer. In the middle was a trip mechanism, you install the trap with the trip mechanism on a small mound of dirt that you create; the mole gets to that mound from either end, digs and BAM, end of mole. The traps need to be covered with a box, flower pot, etc as the mole avoids it when it realizes it's not in a tunnel. When you get the traps, wrap it in a piece of newspaper and light it. This is known as "burning the trap". You need to do this to remove human scent.
I concur with removing insects in the lawn that the moles feed on.
Yeah, I knew it was a gopher. Love the movie by the way. But he did try to drown the gopher, and I'm sure if he hadn't had all the plastique to play with, he would have used fireworks.
my grandpa used to use 1 of 3 things; either calcium carbide, whereny uo dig a hole in one of the runs, dump in the calcium carbide, then add water and cover up (makes acetyline gas), a mole trap (a spring with 5 tines on it, so tht when a mole comes thru the tunnel, it hits the trip, and pokes the mole to death), or bleach. Dump bleach in the run. All three worked.
personally like the bottle rocket idea, sounds like more fun, and somethin for you to say "now kids, dont try this at home, do as i say, not as i do" father did that to me alot when i was little.
