Exclamation Gas Tank Replacement

I have a 1984 Ford F-150 with a Str 6-300 engine and dual tanks.
On both of the tanks it reads empty. I get little movement on the gauge needle. The rear tank will read slightly above "E" and the front one reads slightly below "E".
Can I assume that both sending units should be replaced or are their other prblems that I am not aware of?
If I have to replace the sending units I will want to change the tanks as well, do a swap out if you will. How do I determine what size my tanks are? The rear one is a regular square tank but the front one is a long, side mounted one.
Also, there is a vent valve in the middle of each tank. What is it for and how do I replace it?

Any help would be appreciated. You can e-mail me directly if you wish to.

Thanks

Thumbs up Troublxshooting tips for gas gauges

Most of the time, the problem is in the wiring not in the sender or the guage. Ground your sending wire (the one that hooks to your sending unit) with the key on. The gas gauge should go to full. If it does not go to full or it goes to something else other that full. the problem is in your wiring (corrosion most likely at your harness connectors at your firewall connections). If the fuel gauge does go to full, check your ground to the tank to make sure that the gas tank is effectively grounded. This is the second most common cause for the fuel gauge not working.
If both checks are okay and your fuel gauge still doesn't work, I would suspect the gas gauge itself. I have seen them go many times but no where near as common a problem as corroded wiring and/or connectors.
