seperate the ball joints from the knuckle and remove caliper and undo axle shaft nut and remove knuckle assembly, remove front shock (recommend replace while in there) and remove rubber bounce stop and the axle should squeak out of there.
Front end 'clunk' has several causes. Loose shock mounting bolts, worn sway bar end links (common), worn upper ball joint (more common) or worn wheel bearing. CV joints don't clunk unless the axle nut is loose on the bearing hub. On the E-4WD versions if the rubber isolators suspending the front differential have separated, the differential can be resting on the front cross member producing a big 'clunk' and constant whirring/grinding noise. (very uncommon) As previously mentioned, motor mounts can cause noise, but have been rather rare problems on the Aerostar.

My '93 Aerostar has a cluck in the front end, and it came from the lower balljoints, which I was told rarely ever went bad. But I guess 150,000 miles does a lot to the suspension. Replaced it for about $35 in parts and a case of beer.
ok its more of a click an clack when i make a turn .the boot is torn an the grease is all missing . also many years of having a front wheel drive car is telling me is worn out . but i found out today the hard way not to cut out the old 1s an think u can run in 2 wheel drive . so 2 new shafts are on order an to be replaced tommorow . so ill be putting them tips to work then lol
tks

I have the same problem with my 97 e4wd, cv joints need to be replaced. How big a job is it and how long could it take to do? Two feet of snow and 0 degrees might slow me down a bit!
well as it says up top replace your shocks am undo your ball joints u will be able to just sneek the old 1s out an the new 1s in . when i did mine a few months back the machanics price guide for this job said 3 hours an i did mine on the floor with no air tools in that time an that was both of them it will take u a bit with the 1st 1 to see how it comes out an goes in . once u see the next 1 will be 1/2 that long
good luck
