Rear Window Not Working

Hi, i just got my 88' bronco from my friend...buying it i knew the rear window wouldnt role down. However we used jumper cables and hooked them up to the cables in the rear door...the window would then go down and up. We checked the cables and they work. The motor in the window obviously works, so any ideas why the switch wont role the window down? and is there any way i could rig up a manual role down (with like a handle or something). and how is it possible to open the rear tailgate without the window down...or is it?

Thanks

I had this same problem and fortunatly I replaced the whole tailgate and everything because of rust and it fixed the probelm. I pulled the switch and it was ok and also checked the wireing in the rear and everything was ok. I can tell you the tailgate will not fold down unless the window is all the way down. Good luck.

It is usually the dash switch -- which is the cheapest and easiest part to change. Don't beat it to death like I did with a multimeter, until you pop the $20 and 5 minutes to change that first.

The grounds for both switches go through the dash:

Good luck

my vote is for the wires that are in the harness on the left side of the tailgate and go into the body. from openining and closesing the gate the insulation wears a little and moisture can now get to the copper wire and it will start to rot and finally breaking inside the insulation. maybe the tailgate is not properly closed and this would be an even cheaper fix.
hey broncoWY sorry but i dont believe in spending money you dont have to. this is why i would not spend 20$ without knowing that the switch will correct my problem. it really stinks to spend money and buy a part, spend the time to install it and in the end it still dosent work.

It really stinks if you listen to the "technical help" at JBG and buy a $200 tailgate harness for no reason! I got an extra one now if you need one.

The rear window has to be down to open the tail gate. The is a position switch that is a problem area for fouling up. On mine I had to really slam it shut to get the switch to work. The switch is so you can't roll the window up with out the tailgate being shut. I'd hunt the switch down and start from there. Or just open the tailgate slam it real hard and then try to roll the window up. Sometimes pressing your body weight against the driver side corner of the tailgate and working the window gets it up or down.

i just had my left taigate latch replaced. this morning a local glass shop did the job for $20. the rear glass had to be removed. anyways the old latch didnt latch so i had ta push on the tailgate and have somebody work the switch to lower and close the window. he replaced the latch now it wont even work without putting power directly to the motor. why did it work fine with the old broken switch. what does the lock in the taigate do? i think mine is broken it dosent do anything. i probably have a bad wire in the harness where it goes into the tailgate.

All the lock in the tailgate does is work the up/down switch. If you look on the inside of the tailgate, on the back of the lock is a "L" shaped bar. The bar moves with the key to engage the up/down switch. If the new latch was not adjusted right, it won't put pressure the safety switch. The switch is on the left side of the tailgate. Make sure he didn't pull a wire or cut a wire to the safety switch.

the window motor wiring in my 90 had a male/female connector that was laying in the bottom of the tailgate. it was very corroded and was causing the window to move slowly and one day quit. i cleaned the contacts and put a little twist in the male connector blades. works perfectly now..

my 96 window stopped working so i sprayed WD40 in to the lock plate on driver side and it started working again. there is a switch inside the lock that cuts the power when the gate is opened ,it might be siezed or gummed up. and a can of WD40 is alot cheaper than tailgate parts.

Just connect the two wires on the safety switch together and forget it.....

the switch on the drivers side latch? the connector that plugs into the switch on the latch? that easy, did you have to do that on your tailgate?
