sounds like the nut that holds the yoke to the pinion has come loose. the problem is how much damage has occured to the pinion bearings and other interal parts. the very least you would have to do is replace the pinion seal and reset the bearing preload and hope that the nut stays put. You have to be careful not to overtighten the nut that holds the yoke. That is the tricky part if you want the differential to last it has to be just right.

I agree with the previous poster that you may have damage to the ring and pinion from running with major misalignment. This problem mostly results from a previous "mechanic" not using a new yoke nut when servicing the rear axle. If the ring and pinion are still good, replace both the seal AND the nut. The service manual for the 8.8" rear axle states (I'm sure that's what you have) that the nut should be replaced, not reused. It come with a locking sealer on the threads. If you can't afford a new nut, at least use Loctite locking sealer on cleaned threads and check it a lot.

You need to replace the lock nut that holds on the yoke. It has some lock tite on it so you really shouldn't re-use the only one unless you put some more lock tite on it. I would also replace the crush sleeve while you're at it, and then just tighten that nut down REAL good. Use a cheater pipe. Not sure on how much to tighten exactly, i would do a search on that . Good luck.

If'n this is a 9", it can take upwards of 300 ft/lbs to crush a new sleeve. Prolly have to have two cheaters - one for the nut and one to hold the yoke

Used pinion bearings in a 9" calls for the nut to be tightened until it takes 8-14 INCH/lbs to continually rotate the pinion with the axles REMOVED.
