Tire Replacement

I have a new 2004 (1800 mi.) F250 Supercrew 4WD and the BFG tires that came on it are the pits. I will always be limited to 1,000 lbs. max load or 6,500 lbs. towing. When I replace tires, can I safely go to 8 ply (load range D) LT tires? Also am thinking of moving from original size 265/75/16 size to 285/75/16 tires. What will this do to my mpg and how can I re-calibrate my speedometer?

The truck should have come with E load range tires. With a F-250 you can haul more than 1000lbs. and you can haul a trailer that weighs more than 6500lbs. 03 F-250 r/c V10 3.73l/s

You should be fine with load range D tires - as long as you're not running around at full GVW all the time. And - even though they are 8 instead of 10 ply - some D tires actually have a pretty close weight rating to what the load range E's do. As far as the speedo - I don't know if the '04 trucks are different - but so far Superduties seem to like 285's and most have found that the speedo/odometer is right on with that size!
