engine ping & knock sensor removal

I'm one of those with the annoying pinging when the engine is under load. Yes... I had it serviced and Ford told me everything was normal, even the slight pinging. I think I asked them about replacing the knock seneor and I seem to recall that they said it was a major job. I looked in my after-makert repair manual and it also said it was a major task to replace (removig the entire intake manifold). I think they're both wrong! Although I haven't replaced the knock sensor yet, I was able to get to it. All I had to do was remove the serpentine belt off the generator and then remove the alternator. Once I did that, the knock sensor was in plain view with lots of space to get at it. The only hard part was trasing the wire, which was under the intake manifold, back to the connector on the firewall. Once I found the right connector, I unplugged it and re-routed the wire to make it easier to get at next time. When I find a good price on a sensor, I'll replace it to see if that helps the ping.

Depending on what year, you may have an octane shorting bar that can be removed. This will retard the timing 3 degrees. This is usually located near p.c.m on the wiring harness, is a grey plug-in jumper. worked on my 98 f150 4.6L. Have also had ones (v10's) where timing chains needed to be backed up to cure problem.

Lots of posts here on pinging.
Most suggest reseting the ecu by disconecting the battery overnight. or
Running higher octance fuel.
