New guy with an idiot question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Oct-02 AT 04:51 PM (EST)]I'm semi new to home repairs and I am going to change the rotors and brake pads on my '97 X. I know the job and I can do it, but what else do I need to do at the same time that I am doing the brakes? Do I need to repack the bairings, or buy new bairings? Anything else that you guys can think of while I have the tires and brakes apart??
Thank you all in advance for your knowledge!

-John

It is best to go ahead and buy new berrings. It is just a good preventive mantance to do this. You might also want to get new seals to go along with the berrings.

Hi john, if im not mistaken on a 97 X the bearings are sealed and no need to change unless there is a noise or humming coming from them on the road.

John,

If yours is a 2WD, then you can replace the front bearings. They are sealed though so there isn't an official way to grease them. If yours is a 4x4, then you have to replace the entire hub assembly when the bearings go bad. Again, they are also non-maintenance, sealed bearings. The rear bearings can be replaced, however it requires removing the axle to do it. If you plan on doing a rear differential fluid change, then you might want to go ahead and do the rear bearings if you are anywhere near 100K miles. Both of my rear bearings went out at about 80K on my '97 4x4. My fronts are still original and haven't given me any problems.

Sorry John, I just assumed you had a 4x4. If 2wd then go with the above post.
