im getting a remanufactured engine in my 90 bronco and was wondering what i should do....ive seen posts about mass air conv and lightning beeing put in....its a 351 w right now and im in the range up to 2000 dollars
What are you wanting out of the truck? Do you want more MPG, more top end HP, or more low end torque? This should determine what engine you go with. Let us know!
I've heard good things about Jasper engines..never had one installed, id also look into doing the mass-air swap with an aftermarket mass-air sensor, mass air is "better" newer, better technology, and has more possibilities if your going to build up your engine, gl
I agree; MAF gives you more options in the future. I think they run around 800-1000 bucks, so its not cheap, but worth it if you plan on doing alot of mods in the future. You should be able to get a good motor for around $1000 (ballpark) with a warranty. I'm sure there is someone in Texas that produces good quality engines with performance mods at reasonable prices. I live in eastern Georgia, and just across the South Carolina line there is place called Carolina Engines that remanufactures some really good engines. They specialize in racing motors, but also reman stock and stock with mods. They're building me a High Torque 302 for my '87 with speed density (I couldn't afford Mass Air!). The engine is as tricked as my computer will allow (high torque cam, 9:1 compression ratio, etc), they install all new components, use brass freeze plugs, moly rings, double roller timing chain, etc and have a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty all for $1000. Maybe you could find someone reputable in Texas like that (they have a really good reputation around here). Good luck!
Don't we all! The mass air conversion would be nice if you think you'll be able to pump some money into more modifications later on. For around $2000 you could probably get a MAF conversion and a modifified engine from Jasper or whomever. Then, later on, (or now if you have the extra $$$), you could add headers, high flow exhaust, and an intake kit (and throw in a performance computer to boot!). This should give you more torque than you would ever need! Oh, don't forget about either smaller tires or lower gears (4.11's or equivalent) if you still need more!

WITH exchanging your motor.
For around $1000 you should be able to get a good quality remanufactured engine as long as you turn your old one in (or you could have yours remanufactured for about the same price). Most places have a 200-300 dollar core charge if you don't turn in a block. I'm thinking about keeping mine and selling it since it runs good (I figure I could get more than the core charge if I sell it).
Just for the sake of saying, I have a jasper right now, have had it for 16 months, 50,000 miles, and not a single problem...with the engine. It was bone stock before, but then everything around, on top of or under the engine wanted to go. Not a big deal, just a lot of little things, but like I said, just putting another opinion out there.
just dont by a motor from schucks, autozone, checkers or anyother chain parts store. the motors are crap. if you want a good motor expect to pay a decent price for it.
now i needed a new motor but had a 302 so instead of spendy money on a cheap reman and still be unhappy i went to the local wrecking yard and bought a 95 351w with 80k miles for 800 bucks complete. it has the roller cam and have ran it for over a year now with no issues. and the power is great.
