I have an old truck that sits without a motor(78 crew cab). I removed the motor when it started to go, and rebuilt it for another truck. I was considering going diesel with it and turn it into a hauler, but which engine should I choose? I've heard that all are good engines- but what would best for my situation- I'll be haulin about 9,000-10,000 lbs 2-3 times weekly, but mainly in the summer(mudruns/demoderbys/dragstrip). What is the best engine overall? Which gets the best gas mileage? Any input would be great.
Thanks,
Scott
If you're going to be hauling that amount of weight around that often I'd recommend simply buying a used diesel truck. It will cost a lot less than trying to find an engine and retrofit it for use in your current truck. It's not just the engine you need, you need all the accessories, electronics (if it's a modern diesel), etc. There are plenty of PSDs from 1994.5 on that are available for very reasonable prices.
I am looking into a 12V Cummins conversion for our '72 Chevy pickup. It's pretty basic and the Cummins can make TONS of power. The PS is a great engine, but I want to toy with a Cummins.
BBBxcursion is right, if you want to make a lot of power and you are looking for a used diesel check out the 12v Cummins. I wouldn't recommend the IDI and a used PSD is probably going to be expensive. The IDI is very reliable but won't even come close to the power of the newer diesels. On the other hand, it is really inexpensive to get major power out of the 12v Cummins. Ideally, I would recommend the PSD, but then you also have to add all the electronics which is a pain for the conversion.
hands down to teh cummins 12v motor. I have been wishing for an F250/350 with cummins motor. Great reliability, strength and overall great motor. I really think the cummings is 2 steps above the powerstroke. Id own a cummins if I didnt have to buy a dodge
Just for fun
Chevy 5.9, Ford 7.3 and good ole cummins 12v. The cummins is almost overbuilt
Scottie, these guys are right on, the easiest, cheapest swap would be the early 12v Cummins with the mechanical fuel pump. It is by far the most common of the three, is easier to install and wire then the PSD and makes a ton more power then the IDI. Don't get me wrong I love my PSD, but I wouldn't want to try to put one in something that didn't originally come with one.
8mgp, that is a doctored photo that has been passed around the net for years. I've seen real comparisons and the rods of the Cummins aren't that much larger.
