buy a stock cluster with a factory tach . It will plug right in all the wires are there already. then you need to istall a tach sensor in the injection gear housing ( it already has a plug where it screws into) then plug senser into wiring harness ( that is what that extra plug is in your alternater housing) hopefully your injection gear has a magnetic pickup on it or you will have to install one. the senser is still available at the dealer for about 41.00 and you can find a tach cluster on ebay .
What year and application is your 6.9?
I was talking to a guy with a 83 E series 6.9 and the wire was not there and the timing gear cover did not have the plug in it where the pickup sensor goes.
Here is what it looks like.
according to the dealer ,they show it as an option for 85&up but my 84 had both the plug & the spot on the cover . I think this is only avaiable on the pickup. I have never seen a van so I am not sure about them.
My 83' doesn't have provisions for a tach at all, tach's were not offered on the 83 6.9 and were an option on the 84-85.
I solved the problem by installing a ISS Pro tach with sensors on the damper wheel.
If you can find an instrument cluster with a tach, you'll also need to change the IP housing to a latter model with the threads for the tach sensor. You may find a housing with the sensor already in and working (if you're lucky!).
My '84 had no housing to accept a sensor and no wires in harness to connect to tach. So, I've now got all the parts gathered up and got wiring diagram from Bill Miller and only need time!
This thread could be interesting, i am in need of putting a tach in mine. Nuts, i just went outside and checked i'm in the same boat as some of u are. I don't have any plug or wiring. I guess it is off to the junk yard for me.
If you want a stock one that's going to be a bitch to put in OK, But it's so easy to put in one of the ISS tach's.
Send me a email and I'll send you a picture of mine.
You guys going to the "yard" for an instrument cluster- be sure to get one for a diesel. It will go to 3500 or 4000 RPM and the gasser goes much higher. You may find the sending unit and IP housing there also.
