Question engine paint colors

Hey guys, where is the best place to find out what the original paint color scheem under the hood of my 66 with a 352 should be? I can see that the block and intake and heads were blue but I'm not sure which blue. What parts should be black and what should be cast etc..?

Thanks!

If it was blue, it would be the Ford baby blue. They didn't use the dark blue until the early 70s. However (and I'm not sure what year this changed) in the mid 60s they used the engine color to identify the engine. A '65 352 was gold. Very possible that the '66 was gold as well. Windsors were white and 390s were blue.

Well lets see here I read up on all of this one boring rainy day. So in 65 352 had black blocks and gold valve covers and air cleaners, the "thunderbird" 390's were the same paint scheme and the 390 PI's were black blocks with silver covers and air cleaner. In 66 though 428's 390's,and 352's were entirely Corporate Ford Blue from the block up.

Thanks thunderguns. I knew it changed somewhere in those years. Now, was that the baby blue Ford Corporate blue or the later deep blue? My '69 has the baby blue but I'm not sure if that's correct.

If you're not into everything being "correct" here's why I like the baby blue - a Blue Flame dizzy cap matches it perfectly. That's something you can rarely acheive, since dizzy caps are almost always black. It's even possible to find wires that color if you look.

Question

So let me get this straight, a 66 352 is dark ford blue from the block up ,including the oil bathed air cleaner? I thought they were always black. And speaking of black, are the pulleys suppose to be black as well as the alternator, starter, etc... or what. I guess it is not that big a deal, just a lot of work to get it ready to paint after a tear down , it would be nice to do it "right"! Should the feul pump be the color of the block or should it stay cast color as it comes for the store? The power steering pump I have is very dark blue with a black bracket. Does anyone have a pic of a correctly painted 352 they could post or tell me where to find it?

Thanks guys! It is really nice being able to ask you folks all these questions that other people feel are unimportant!

OK here we go. Since im going to take it you were talking about a truck. From before I was talking about car engines, but after looking around I found that truck engines were either one of these.
Air cleaner=Semi-Gloss Black
Gas Engine Block=Semi Gloss Black
Fuel Pump=Natural
Alternator=Natural
Oil Pan=Semi-Gloss Black
Water Pump= Semi-Gloss Black
Timing Cover=Semi-Gloss Black
Heads= Semi-Gloss Black
Intake=Semi-Gloss Black
Exahust Manifolds=Natural
Valve Covers= Semi-Gloss Black
Balancer= Semi-Gloss Black
Dizzy=Semi-Gloss-Black
Oil Pump Adapter= Semi-Gloss Black
Power Sterring= Semi-Gloss Black
Pullys=Semi-Gloss Black
Starter=Semi-Gloss Black
Now also all those parts just mentioned could be the darker ford blue. Trucks wasnt anything like the cars, color wise. The "FE" engines in trucks were either all black or all blue, if you see anything else, some one has added their own touch to it. {That doesnt apply to deisels or small blocks.} If I were you id take lets say the valve covers and scrape one down to the base and see what color was on it first, chances are it will either be black or blue. From there just do everything like mentioned above with the correct color and you will be set. Btw I said natural on the exhaust manifolds b/c no matter what you paint them it obviously wont stay long. Hope this helps

Your '65 352 has an oil bath air cleaner? That's definitely not correct.

In a car, usually the entire engine was Ford blue, and all the peripherals were either black or natural. I've seen both dark blue and black power steering pumps, but never a baby blue one. So the correct color for your's would be black. Water pump, timing cover and aircleaner all blue. Balancer, brackets, and pulleys black. Dizzy and alternator unpainted.

Wow, thanks for all the info guys! That's the kind of stuff I have been looking for. According to my Ford shop manual, oil bath cleaners were standard equipment on the 66' F100 which mine is, with paper elements being an option on a couple of bigger engines. There were two different types of system as well, "open" and "closed" So far I have been unable to determine which type my truck was since someone had changed the breather and the valve covers. The mystery continues!!
