A guy selling a truck I am interested in says that something is broken on the column. It is a automatic. He says basically that instead of using the lever to change from p,r,n,d you have to turn the column to put it into gear. Is this a sign of a serious transmission problem? How expensive is it to fix?
Sounds like a column shifter problem. Take it for a spin and see how it shifts. When you put it in drive see how the tranny feels when you take off. You should be able to listen to the rpms of the engine and feel the auto shift. I've never really dealt with auto column shifters and repairing them. All, but two of my vehicles are manual.
Yeah, that's a col. problem most likely. The parts in the col. get sloppy over the years. The repair parts are pretty cheap and available from the vendors on this site.
Can you give me a idea of what to look for parts wise? Lets assume it is totally in need of a rebuild. I'm curious how much it would cost, because I would imagine I would get tired of shifting like that!
I hate to steal the thred but I am having the same problem. Except I don't know about turning the column The P/O said it broke along time ago where you couldn't shift it into park. Now you can't shift it any. It's something in the column because I can shift through all the gears with the lever on the column under the hood. If I put that lever down into 1st, BTW C4 Auto, and put the lever in the truck down in 1st, I can shift up to reverse, but then you can't pull it back down with the lever in the truck. The P/O said he talked to a man about it along time ago and he said it needed a whole new column. I figure just something in there broke and could be replaced. So like edselman, I need some idea of what might need replaced, or if all would need replaced, what would it run price wise. I have a friend who owns a '72 and says he has taken his column out in about 45 minutes, so that shouldn't be a problem, but he doesn't know what might be broken. Thanks for any help. Sry for the long post.
You guy's can post everything and still not give the right anwser only maybes!
The only true way is pull it down and check it out or go to the bone-yard and get one there.
(COULD BE')
1. Bad shift tube
2. shift lever end
3.shift linkage on tube loose
4.steering sector bushing
5.gearshift insulator bushing
6.???
my 2 cents

Thank you orich for your $.02. Now of those parts on your list, are they availible at Autozone and are they costly? I figure once the column is out it should be pretty straight forward to find and fix the problem. Just wondering on the cost of the parts or would it be more cost efficent to go buy a whole column out of a boneyard.
