How to check for trouble codes

Hi all.

Anyone know how to check the trouble codes? I believe you have to jumper the connector and look for flashes in the cab with the "check engine light".
- what pins to you jumper
- what do the flashes mean?

cheers

In my '97 E350 van w/ PSD, you hook up to the female connector under the column. I hooked up a programmer, which also reads codes, to reprogram the computer module. You have the option of just reading error codes if you wish.

thnx, I'm looking specifically for how to read them without buying any special reader. I remember reading something about that a while back.

Everything I have been able to find requires you to use an analog volt meter for the test... if you have one let me know and I could look the pins up for you in my Haynes book!

OK, I finally found a great site on how to do this - took a long time. You don't need a meter, just use the check engine light in the cab.
