it's time to replace the king pins on my 78 f100. i have not replaced king pins before and wanted some guidance. the pins have always been greased and the front suspension is in good repair otherwise. what method would be the best route to go. can i use an old pin to drive out the existing pin or should i use a different drift. thanks
I am in the process of replacing the kingpins on my 72 F250. I used an iron chisel, a tempered punch and a piece of old pipe to drive out my old pin. I thought of using an old kingpin but feared that the hardened steel might have been too brittle? Anyway you will prob be just fine as your pins have always been greased. I could not even find the grease nipple on mine. I had to chisel out about in inch of road crime just to locate it. The kingpin was about welded to the lower bushing. Good luck!
Wow, you're lucky. Mine werent greased in a LOOONG time. Had to take out the i-beam to get the passenger side out. In your case though, just usesome sort of drift to pound out the kingpin from the top. I used some craftsman deep sockets, since you can take them back if you screw them up. Just make sure you take out the retaining bolt that holds the kingpin in. I forgot to take that out. Kingpin wont go anywhere with that in. Pretty simple job. Good luck. Quick question though, why are you replacing them anyways? Are you having camber problems? Let me know, because i just went through the same thing with my 78 ford, i rebuilt the whole front end on it. Keep in touch, and you can email me if you need to!
Pound it out from the top DOWN. So you're basically driving it out the bottom. Its a lot harder to go thru the top, since you will be upside down. Any more questions, just ask.
