Overdrive light/switch

The overdrive button and light are located at the end of the AT selector lever on my 2000 F-150. When I push the botton, nothing happens. The light never comes on. When I drive on the highway the transmission shifts into overdrive automatically. When I push the button while on the highway it does not change gears.

It appears that my transmission is always in OD mode. Does anyone have any ideas where the problem might be?

The wires to the lever may be broken at the base of the shift lever. Take the trim cover off the steering column and check the wires. Or it could be a bad switch but check the wires first.
