I have got the body finally off my 51 F-5, and looking at the motor , that I thought was red is actually a green color. Did Ford switch the engine color during late 51 productions? If this is correct does anyone know the paint code for Dupont or any other for this color?
Thanks for any help.
My info shows bronze or green for '51 trucks. Red was the commercial engine color - industrial, agriculture, etc
Keep in mind it was very unusual for an engine to go 100,000 miles back then. Most old trucks had rebuilt engines swapped in and since the blocks are all the same it probably wasn't the engine it came with.
My '48 had a period correct flatty in it, but the numbers were ground off the heads and the mfg date stamping was missing on the intake flat. When I took it apart I found EAB crank and other internals. The '52/53 rebuild was probably taken off the shelf and installed and the original 48 8RT went in someone else's truck or car after it was rebuilt.
Paint color was the last thing anybody worried about.
The numbers match. I bought it of the original owners grandson, after his passing. He only used it to haul hay. I was told it had 4900 org. miles and the odometer shows only 4938. Just trying to restore it to as original as possible.
My 50 F5 had a red engine, built in Chicago. The way I see it, is if they used bronze or green engines in small trucks and red engines in big trucks you might find a green engine in a big truck or maybe a red engine in a small truck. So you could repaint it either green or red and your engine is likely original. DO NOT go to your local Auto Parts Zone Warehouse and get a can of Ford Red Engine paint. But you might find some other color there you will be happy with. Ford Red is not the right color red, it's much too orange.
I think I used Massey Furgusson red engine paint paint from NAPA which wasn't quite dark enough but closer than Ford Red. I figure when it gets dirty it should look just right.
Check your ID plate at the glove box, and refer it to color codes that can be found on the net. My engineis a mercury , 8CM, color green. The origional v-6 in my 52 F-1 was repaced with a v-8 flathead. Best of luck, Monte
What about a 56 F-100? where can I find information on that? I was figuring on just painting it black, but if you guys know the actual color it might be nice to take that route.
