Hi, Looking for some ideas. 91 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6, distributorless ignition-
Car sat for about a month, when I tried to start it, it cranked well, but would not start. Tried ether, but no go, tank half full, seems to be an ignition problem.
Tried several more times during the day, but no start. That evening I pulled an plug wire and had my wife crank it, at first no spark, then all of a sudden spark and the engine started. Started it several more times that evening and the next day. It then sat for a week and guess what, no start. I had it towed to a friends garage, tried it after it was unloaded and it started. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Anyone else have a similar problem?
Thanks, Dave
It can be tough tracking down an intermittent fault like that.
Might try running the EEC-IV self-test. There may be a code in continuous memory to go along with the no spark condition.
Other than that, each time it fails, you have to track down where the ignition system is failing.
The erratic start/no start was the first clue- it was obviously an ignition issue, wouldn't start priming with ether- it seemed to me that it had to be the crank sensor, cam sensor or ignition module- crank sensor was the cheapest and easiest to try first- sometimes you get lucky-
