How will my 98' Explorer do for towing?
I've been reading through allot of posts in here in reference to towing, and I'm trying to find out what I should do to my Explorer before I start towing. I have a 98' Explorer XLT 4x4, 4.0 V6 SOHC. I bought it used so I don't have a list of all it was equiped with. It has a tow bumper and the 4 prong flat plug for trailer lights. What I'm trying to find out is what trans & rear do I have and what is included with tow package and is what I have considered the tow package? I'm prepared to install a trans & oil cooler, trans temp gauge & a actual tow bar. But I don't know that I need to, or even if my Explorer has a trans or oil cooler already on it. My bumper says max tow weight is 3500lbs. , I'll be towing a boat that weighs approx. 2200 lbs. (with no cargo in it). If anyone could please offer me any info on finding this information about my Explorer and what I should install to prepare for towing I would really appreciate it. I'd like to be able to take the occasional long trip as well as local short trips without worrying about my trans or motor. Thanks.
