Anybody ever get rid of the clutch fan, and put a regular conventional fan on a diesel? I have a 89 7.3, and would think a conventional fan would help with cooling, by eliminating the large clutch, and continually turning at speed.
If so, what kind? And from whom?
I installed a car type flex fan like you get from any auto parts store trying to increase airflow because of a overheating problem I was having. It caused the engine to heat up more then before, I took it off and installed the fan clutch.
Having that fan turn at engine speed all the time will cost you a bunch of fuel mileage.
It will also increase the noise in the cab dramaticly.
I took mine off and installed electric fans on it when it was a 6.9 NA.
The fuel mileage went up almost 2 MPG, the truck was much quieter inside, and I rarely needed the electric fans unless I was hauling a large load or driving very slowly.
I would still have them on there except I never could get an electric fan to last very long. I was spending more on replacing fans than I was saving on fuel, so the stock fan went back on.
Thanks evryone.
I ended up just buying another fan clutch($180). The only thing that worrys me, is it was made in China! Some more cheap China crap, it's a Torqthrust. But I'm running 10 degrees cooler so far, will see how it goes pulling my trailer this weekend.
