Last weekend I helped run a first time local mud race- for our stock class engines arent supposed to have aftermarket parts. One guy had an Edelbrock/carter carb on his dodge. I was pretty shure that carters were original on some dodge engines, after some checking with some others on if that was correct, I let him run. Does anybody know if the Carters were ever original on TRUCKS, or just cars, and if so, were they only on certain engines????Im not trying to pick on the guy, I just dont want others in the class to complain about him running something they dont feel is legal.
Carter was the OEM supplier for most Mopar engines, big and small block. My Dodge vans had small blocks (318ci) with Carter carbs. The Edelbrock looks exactly like the older stock Carter.
mopars used Carter AFB's in the 60's.
in the late 60's/early 70s Carter AVS's.
Most 2bbl trucks were a carter BBD for 318s and a holley 2010 for 360/383/400
most trucks with a 4bbl BEFORE 1972 had a holley 4160 for 426W/413/440 and a AVS 383. Some enclosed engine bays (motorhome and COE) got marine versions of these carbs.
after 1972 and untill the early 1980's it was the speadbore Carter Thermoquad only.
in the early/mid 1980's Dodge switched to the feedback Rochester Quadrajet and kept it until they went EFI.
If he was running an Edelbrock he was not running legal. The Eddy carb is a COPY of the AFB with some improvments inside. It is a performance carb, not stock. If the truck is newer than 72 the only legal 4 barrel carb would be a Carter Thermoquad which looks nothing like an AFB.
This is cool !
so we ask about Dodge Carbs on the Ford Truck Enthusiast Site ?
And get answers
Now we know who the Dodge trolls are
Ummmmmmmmmm, yep, I resemble that remark. I have driven Fords off and on for years, since I learned to drive actually. When I do stray it is into mopars. Right now, I am an all Ford family although I am looking for a restorable A-body mopar right now.
