I was talking to a guy today and discovered he had a front Dana 60 for sale. It is disassembled completely and has a bad ring and pinion in it. The guy wants $650 or best offer. It is out of a '79 F350.
Is this a reasonable price? I have no knowledge of rebuilding/building axles so I would have to have it done at a shop. I'd throw in a set of 4.10s with some sort of a locker. So in other words what would it cost on average to have it thrown back together? I know I didn't specify a locker, I'm up to suggestions from the PROs
That's not a bad price. R&P set will cost you a few bucks ($150-$250) and you'll probably need to have someone install it unless you know how yourself. D60s are a bit of a hassle and if you don't get it right you'll be buying another set of gears. Figure on $500 for a Detriot locker. Here's the thing, if you bought a D60 front with good gears you'll pay $1000. If it doesn't have the right ratio you'll have to buy new gears anyway and if you want a locker you'll still have to buy that. So no matter which way you look at it this would save you $350. What I would do is make him a cash offer of $500 and see if he takes it. People do funny things when you wave money in front of them. Even if you pay $650 that's not bad, just be certain all your parts are present.
junk that crappy ford hydro assist setup, i think for crossove ron that truck you need a 2wd box setup like pro's... if you want them i have 4.10's that came out of my front 60....you just pay shipping and maybe a couple bucks for me ridin up to the ups store..if you want em.
jump on this deal man! if it is complete ie...housing, carrier, axles, brake part, both hubs and lockouts...you got a steal for 650...but do wut ivan siad, flash 500 or sumthin like tha tin front of him...he might bite!
one othe rthing...your prolly gonna want to run larger tires now that you ofund a 60...so i would think about sumthi nlower than 4.10's depending on wut size you want. and you need to find a dana 70 or sterling for your rear while your at it
I think I'm gonna stick with 36" TSL Radials for now You can always go bigger. Now I'll feel better about going out and wheeling hard and gettin on the skinny pedal.
I suppose I'll have to tear out my back axle now and have that locked up also.....
The guy said the axle is complete from disc brake to disc brake........
Yea, I'd say thats a cool deal, especially if you can snap if up for a bit less. I'd rather buy it like that because you get to inspect everything and you end up with new gears for less than a fully intact unit would have cost.
