Hey guys.
I just had a 40 series flowmaster put on my 1986 ford f-150 today..and I really wasn't impressed soundwise . I figured that it would be loud. It does sound good, but I can't even hear it inside the cab lol..and barely hear it outside the cab. Is this how this muffler is supposed to sound? My truck had 2 cats on it..1 may have been a resinator. Anyways..i took the first cat/resinator off that the 302 y pipe hooked into and kept the second one. I did a 302 to 351w swap so i just have the second cat/resinator. How could I make this thing louder? I want a nice mellow deep tone. It is single exhaust with 2.25 pipe coming out of the cat to the back..any suggestions or help?
give the flows some time too. They usually become a bit louder over time. I agree with you though, they weren't as loud as I was expecting when I first started my truck up.
Just a single FM 40 wont do you any good...you'll have to run duals for it to blow your skirt up...Put some turndowns under the bed, it WILL resonate really good under that bed..especially with that beefy 351w under the hood....I passed some guy down the road, stopped at a red light, yells out his window, "hey man, that thing sounds good, what you got in there a 351? (i have a 302) he said he wanted to buy it lol....But I would most def put duals on, ive got 2.5" duals after the Y pipe, no cats and 2 FM 40's, x pipe also will help balance out the sounds, turndowns rattle everything in the cab if thats what your going for....hope that helps, if you need anymore questions answered, you know who to call, GHOSTBUSTERS

Humm, given the way the Flowmasters are made, there shouldent be any change over time.
I would go with the high flow cat on there with the 40, you'll be surprised how much louder it'll be with a hi flow cat, along with more power when you change it out too.
Since my 1988 F-150 5.8L has no cats and I live in Dallas, I have to redo the exhaust. I am having a Magnaflow 2 cat setup (like stock) and a SI/DO flowmaster original 40 series and having the duals turned out in front of the passenger rear wheel.

u wouldnt think there would be...but there is. on my 95 f150 i have the first cat (one that y pipe off manifolds goes into) going into a 40 original si/do, out the back with 18x3.5" tips. after a couple months it DID get louder. i have a few buddies with FM's and they both said they got noticably louder too.
as for the original question...id say put a hiflow cat, or no cat at all...cats make a world of difference, like already mentioned.
Anybody got dual FM w/ headers...I'm no doubt looking into sum headers, whats a good cheap brand...something that wont crack or break on me in a week......
